Illusia continues to amaze
The wow factor – that’s what the autumn-flowering Illusia has delivered since its first unveiling. During its debut presentation in late 2023 in Japan, it was an instant sensation. Growers worldwide remain enthusiastic to this day. “Illusia is undeniably a success,” says growing supporter Rick Slingschröder. “Growers think it’s an absolutely stunning plant.”
Illusia’s introduction followed meticulous breeding and extensive testing with select growers. “We always test our products under a variety of conditions,” Rick explains. “Every grower’s environment is slightly different – varying light levels, humidity, and other natural factors. At the end of the day, we’re working with natural products in natural circumstances.” Once the results met the highest standards, Illusia was unveiled to the world at the FlowerTrials in Japan.
Exceptionally unique
From that moment, Illusia captivated the world, thanks to its extraordinary flowers. “Illusia looks right at you,” Rick says, gesturing to the distinctive flowers. “It’s fascinating to see. When the plant is in full flowering, it resembles a crown of flowers, with countless buds underneath. Illusia truly showcases the magic of Mother Nature.”
Such a unique flower deserves a presentation that highlights its special qualities at retail. “If you place Illusia among similar plants, its uniqueness doesn’t stand out,” Rick notes. “You really need to showcase the plant on its own.” To reinforce this, Illusia is marketed as a standalone brand. It comes with its own distinctive label, and growers can order additional materials, such as decorative pots, to enhance its presentation.
Perfect timing
The ideal blooming period varies by region. In colder areas, Rick recommends early September, while in warmer regions, late September is preferable. “Heat can cause the flower to develop slightly differently, with blooms tilting back. That detracts from the unique effect of the flowers appearing to ‘look at’ you,” he explains.
Long-lasting blooms
“Growing Illusia requires a little extra patience,” says Rick, who advises cultivating it in 12 cm pots. The first blooms appear around 25 weeks after sowing and continue until about 30 weeks. “But don’t start harvesting at the first few flowers,” Rick cautions. “I always recommend waiting until 28 weeks, when about 90% of the plants are ready to harvest at once.”
Illusia’s exceptional flower longevity makes the wait worthwhile. “Even with five to ten flowers, you can safely wait a little longer,” Rick assures. “Its durability is remarkable – it can bloom for up to four weeks without showing any ageing flowers.”
With its stunning beauty, unmatched longevity, and thoughtful branding, Illusia is more than just a plant – it’s a masterpiece that elevates any space it graces.
