Super Series Elegante: the midi Cyclamen for warm conditions
In these times of climate change, Cyclamen cultivation can sometimes be a challenge. Specialists at Schoneveld Breeding saw opportunities in breeding Cyclamen suited for warmer conditions. Several years ago, the large-flowered Cyclamen Super Serie Leopardo took the market by storm. Now it’s time for its smaller sibling, the Super Serie Elegante, to make an impact. Gianfranco de Leo, Regional Manager for Southern Europe provides insights into this easy-to-grow beauty.
"Climate change is now a reality; temperatures are rising in many regions. This prompted us to develop Cyclamen that are less sensitive to high temperatures," states Gianfranco. Typically, Cyclamen do not thrive in heat; high temperatures hinder leaf development and delay flowering. Gianfranco elaborates, "We aimed to address this issue. In the midi segment, we lacked a Cyclamen with Super Serie qualities suitable for summer flowering; an appealing, heat-tolerant Cyclamen with a compact, rounded growth habit, robust stems, and abundant foliage and flowers."
Midi range
Elegante is a valuable addition to the already existing midi Cyclamen range, complementing Allure and Macro. "Allure performs optimally in autumn, followed by Macro at the end of autumn and the start of winter," explains Gianfranco. "With the introduction of Elegante, we now extend this period to include summer, enabling growers to supply strong, top-quality midi Cyclamen."
Enhanced efficiency for growers
"Elegante offers significant advantages for growers," Gianfranco continues. He highlights the consistent growth and uniform flowering under warm conditions. "This means growers can avoid the usual interventions required to maintain leaf production. Elegante simplifies the process, reducing the need for corrective actions while still delivering top-quality plants," Gianfranco summarises.
Heat-tolerant range
Elegante complements the heat-tolerant range, being the smaller sibling of the powerhouse Leopardo and the larger sibling of Super Serie Verano. "Our heat-tolerant Cyclamen range is now complete," notes Gianfranco. "The mini Verano, midi Elegante, and large Leopardo provide an easy-to-grow series of heat-tolerant Cyclamen."
Proven excellence
Extensive testing preceded the market introduction of Super Serie Elegante. Gianfranco remarks, "We conducted numerous tests in southern Italy with very positive feedback. Elegante remains uniform and is ease to cultivate. Even when temperatures, a few years ago, in Italy surpassed 40 degrees Elegante continued to bloom beautifully. It is a superior product for growers, retailers, and consumers."
